The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are officially well underway after kicking off yesterday. The start of the games were marked by Naomi Osaka who lit the Olympic flame, celebrating the opening of the 2020 games a year later than planned due to the global coronavirus pandemic. However, one person was involved that viewers seemingly weren’t expecting, in the form of Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle.

Susan, 60, could be heard as thousands of paper doves fell from the sky.

The ceremony started with a series of video montages and ended in a countdown and fireworks display, which was applauded by the few journalists and volunteers in the stadium.

A 1970 Japanese folk song, the West-Lothian native belted out the number as part of the Covid-safe ceremony.

Viewers of the Opening Ceremony were shocked to suddenly hear the BGT finalist, and took to social media to weigh in on Susan’s role.

One wrote: “Susan Boyle and the Tokyo Olympics are not a pair I would have put together but there we go.”

“That was so beautiful Susan Boyle to hear you sing at the Olympics, a lovely surprise. Beautiful,” said a social media user.

Another penned: “A wonderful honour! Well deserved. Your version of this beautiful song is heavenly!”

While a third added: “What an honour. Congratulations.”
